Shoes have absolutely nothing to do with quilting, but they are an extension of making clothing which is contemporary with quilting. Making shoes are a natural extension of wool felting. The first shoes were made of woven grass and wool felt. Inhabitants of very cold climates have worn wool felt shoes for centuries. Shoes were made with leather after the invention of the awl.
