Pigment Mixing Recipes

These are my own simple pigment formulas. I'm content with having only two or three shades of a single pigment and I didn't bother with warm grays. I have a total of 180 colors in my palette based on pure pigments and Lake dyes, and that's plenty. How many colors does one artist need?

This is what I mean by a Touch and this is how to get it. Swipe the tip of a #61 palette knife across a baby wipe. Dip it into pigment. Don't get too much. It's not an exact measurement, but it's about half a drop or 1/16 of a gram.

White = Titanium Dioxide
Black = Black Oxide

Colors in red are formulas that I need to remix.

Greys

The tone of grey you end up with depends on the tone of black you begin with. Carbon black, lamp black, and black ochre have a blue tint and create cool grey. Bone or ivory black has a yellow tint and creates warm grey.

Cool or Warm Grey 30% = 1 Dash White + 1 Drop Carbon or Ivory Black

Cool or Warm Grey 50% = 1 Dash White + 2 Drops Carbon or Ivory Black

Cool or Warm Grey 90% = 1 Dash White + 4 Drops Carbon or Ivory Black

Muted Tones

Muted tones are colors mixed with gray or a blend of complimentary colors. French Grey results from the combination of blue and orange. It has a brown tint. The sources of blue or orange will determine the result. Davy's Grey is a special blend that results in a green gray color. Payne's Gray is a special blend that results in a deep blue grey color. Other complimentary blends result in neutral greys of various tints.

Mix 10% Cool Grey first (3 Dashes White + 1 Drop Black)

Antique Rose = 1 Dash 10% Cool Grey + 1 Drop Crimson

Rust = 1 Dash 10% Cool Grey + 1 Drop Orange Oxide

As I stated on the Understanding Pigment page, a company may have a different formula for each quality of paint and the pigments used may vary according to the binder and/or additives used. I chose to highlight Daler-Rowney because they are an economy paint company that lists the CI numbers on each tube of paint. You won’t find this information on bottles of craft paint.
