Below, I’ve listed every brush I could find with descriptions and their intended use. Dimensions are for the bristle length and flat width or round diameter in millimeters. There is no industry standard size for brushes.
Standard Brushes
These are the basic brushes that every painter should have.
Round: They have a large belly and a long tapered end. They are extremely versatile and can be used for long, bold strokes and detail work. A round brush made with sable hair comes to a very fine tip and can be used for delicate brushwork. Use on point or apply pressure to make thick-to-thin strokes. Detail work or filling large areas depending upon the size of the brush and pressure applied. Watercolor wash effects. Used with watercolor. Sizes: 3/0, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12
Dimensions:
3/0 = 7 x 2.24mm
0 = 9 x 2.08mm
1 = 10 x 2.12mm
2 = 13 x 2.06mm
3 = 15 x 3.16mm
4 = 17 x 3.66mm
5 = 18 x 3.86mm
6 = 20 x 4.7mm
8 = 22 x 5.62mm
10 = 24 x 6.53mm
12 = 26 x 8.15mm
Flat: A flat brush is a square-ended brush with long brush fibers and a flat ferrule. With a brush head that’s wide but not very thick, flat paintbrushes hold a lot of color. Use a flat brush to make thick, consistent strokes or thin lines. Flat brushes are great for blocking in solid shapes of color. Used with oil and acrylic. Sizes: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20
Dimensions:
2 = 15.5 x 6.42mm
4 = 20.5 x 10.1mm
6 = 24 x 12.3mm
8 = 28.5 x 15.6mm
10 = 33.5 x 20.5mm
12 = 38 x 24.7mm
16 = 43 x 35mm
20 = 49 x 46mm
Bright: Useful for short, controlled strokes with thick or heavy paints, bright paintbrushes contain short fibers, either natural or synthetic, that curve inward at the tip, and are crimped into a flat ferrule and set in a long handle. The width and the length of the brush head in bright brushes is approximately equal, similar to a square. Used with oil and acrylic. Sizes: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12
Dimensions:
2 = 9 x 6.75mm
4 = 13 x 10.3mm
6 = 16.5 x 12.5mm
8 = 21 x 15.8mm
10 = 24 x 20mm
12 = 29 x 25.5mm
Angle: Artists choose angular paintbrushes for making precise strokes, lines, and curves with thick or heavy paints. In an angular brush, short fibers are set with longer fibers at one end of the brush head, making the brush ideal for reaching into small areas and for filling in corners. Angular brushes are similar to flat brushes in that their flat shape helps them cover large areas of a painting surface. Used with acrylic. Sizes: 1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2”
Dimensions:
1/4” = 6 x 6.95mm
3/8 = 8.5 x 9.37mm
1/2” = 10 x 12.3mm
Short Filbert: Natural shape for flower petals, leaves, duck and bird feathers. Used with oil. Size: 4
Dimension: 4 = 15 x 9.56mm
Filbert (Oval): Filbert paintbrushes have a thick, flat ferrule and oval-shaped, medium-to-long brush fibers. Because of their soft, rounded edges, these long-handled brushes are ideal for blending and decorative work. Many artists use the filbert for filling circular areas, floating color and blending. Natural shape for flower petals, leaves, duck and bird feathers. Used with oil and acrylic. Sizes: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16
Dimensions:

Dimension: 6 = 31 x 12.1mm
Fabric: Fabric brushes come in the same shapes and sizes as standard brushes, but they are made of stiff white Taklon. They’re designed to push paint into the fibers of fabric, rather than having the paint simply adhered to the surface. You may have to use palmyra fiber to duplicate them. Miniature Brushes
Miniature brushes are used for painting dolls and miniatures. You’ll notice some size discrepancies between one mini brush and another. This is especially true for the mini filbert. One size 0 is 4mm shorter than another size 0 and they’re both called mini. I think the shorter one should be called a micro to avoid confusion.

2 = 18 x 2.06mm
6 = 22 x 2.79mm
Rigger: A rigger brush has much longer hair than other brushes and is used for painting straight lines in watercolor. It is called a rigger because it was used to paint the rigging on maritime paintings, the long hair absorbs any hand-shake limiting the wobble in the mark that is made and allows the artist to have fingers of the brush-holding hand resting on the surface to guide and control the line. The line should be created with one slow and steady movement of the arm. The paint should also be sufficiently diluted to allow for a smooth flow. Sizes: 8, 10
Dimensions:
8 = 32 x 2.79mm
10 = 34 x 3.56mm

Long “Ultra” Round: Round for holding a lot of color. Sharp tip for creating detail like pine needles, grass or hair. The full belly of the brush provides a reservoir for paint, allowing continuous line work without reloading. Slight pressure can be applied to vary line thickness, but too much pressure will cause the belly hairs to flare out. Popular watercolor brush. Sizes: 8, 12
Dimensions:
8 = 25 x 4.57mm
12 = 33 x 7.11mm
Lettering Brushes
Lettering brushes are used for painting script, scrollwork, calligraphy and signs. One Stroke brushes are designed to create block letters with a highlight or shadow with a single stroke. They are meant to be double loaded or may be used with a single color. Donna Dewberry used the wide brushes to create her tole painting technique.
Script: Liner: Length of hair holds more paint than a regular liner, but requires more control. Well suited for long scrolls, straight lines, or stroke work. Sizes: 10/0, 2/0, 1, 2
Dimensions:
10/0 = 18 x 1.87mm
2/0 = 22 x 2.12mm

Paintbrushes are assembled in a metal cup that forms a mold for the desired brush shape. After the bristles are trimmed to size and bound together, they dipped in glue. They are then, transferred to a metal ferrule into which resin is poured. When this adhesive has hardened, the ferrule is glued to the handle and crimped. The bristles are dipped into a cornstarch solution to shape and stiffen them.
